Osteopathic Medicine

Osteopathic medicine is a unique form of American medical care that was developed in the late 19th century. It places emphasis on the interrelationship of the body’s nerves, muscles, bones and organs, and the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Osteopathic physicians, known as DOs, are fully licensed to prescribe medication and practice in all specialty areas, including surgery. However, they also use a type of manual treatment called osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) for the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury. DOs understand that all the body’s systems are interconnected and each one affects the others – they focus less on symptom relief and more on helping the body find health through a holistic approach.

What is an Osteopathic Physician?

Many physicians in the United States carry a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (DO). After medical school, a minority pursue advanced training in the musculoskeletal diagnosis and techniques. Of these, a handful specialize in Osteopathic medicine, receiving board certification in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM). Dr Waddington holds this board certification.
